What Is Thatching?
Thatching, dethatching, and power raking all refer to the same process — removing excess thatch buildup from your lawn. Thatch is a layer of dead grass, roots, and organic matter that sits between the soil and the living grass blades.
A thin layer (less than ½ inch) can actually benefit your lawn by helping retain moisture and regulate soil temperature. However, when that layer becomes too thick, it blocks water, nutrients, and air from reaching the roots — leading to weak, unhealthy turf.
For cool-season grasses, the best time to dethatch is early spring or early fall. Warm-season grasses should be dethatched in late spring to early summer, when growth is strongest.
